Explained: What Goes Into Selection Of Team India’s Head Coach
Sourv Ganguly and Ravi Shastri

Ravi Shastri’s tenure as the head coach of the Indian Cricket team is coming to an end. He has said that he would like to vacate the position after the 2021 T20 World Cup to be played in the UAE. Under Shastri India have Test sere wins overseas in Australia and the side also reached the ICC World Test Championship final. The Virat Kohli-led side also made it to the ICC World Cup 2019 final.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has opened up applications for the post and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly was in England last week to discuss about Shastri’s future. The selection process for Ravi Shastri’s replacement is expected to begin in the upcoming months.

In this article, we will try to explain what goes into the selection of the head coach of the Indian cricket team.

After Ravi Shastri’s end of first tern as the head coach, the BCCI BCCI had revealed the selection criteria for the cricket team’s coaching staff. Shastri was chosen by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) formed by Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman.

A nine-point criterion in 2017 was narrowed down to only three key pointers in 2019. The head coach of Team India should be less than 60 years old, this is the first criteria. This year, Shastri will turn 60, which will automatically mean that he is out of contention for the next role.

The second criteria for Team India’s head coach is that the candidates need to have coaching experience of a minimum of two years at the international level. The third and final criteria is that he should have played at least 30 Tests and 50 ODI matches for the Indian cricket team.

In 2019, the CAC included former cricketers Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy. The CAC interviewed candidates and finalised their decision based on the following five parameters:

  • Coaching philosophy
  • Experience of coaching
  • Coaching achievements
  • Communication
  • Knowledge of modern coaching tools

Meanwhile, the search for Ravi Shastri’s replacement is still on with Rahul Dravid being one of the candidates likely to replace him.
