India head coach Gautam Gambhir has urged a complete suspension of cricketing ties with Pakistan, including participation in the Asia Cup and ICC events, following the Pahalgam terror attack. On April 22, 2024, the peaceful town of Pahalgam in South Kashmir was rocked by a brutal terror attack. The massacre claimed the lives of 26 innocent people, most of them tourists enjoying the beauty of the region.
Reactions Across the Country
The incident triggered an outpouring of grief, solidarity, and indignation across India. From candlelight vigils to trending hashtags, the nation united in mourning. But more importantly, there was a growing demand for decisive action — not just military or diplomatic but symbolic too.
Government’s Response Measures
The Indian government quickly took stern steps. It suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, shut down the only land border crossing at Attari, and downgraded diplomatic ties with Pakistan. These moves weren’t just administrative—they sent a loud and clear message: Enough is enough.
Gautam Gambhir’s Firm Stand
Speaking at the ABP summit, former cricketer and newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir didn’t mince his words. He flat-out rejected any possibility of India playing Pakistan, not even in multinational tournaments like the Asia Cup or ICC events.
Gambhir stated, “My personal answer to this is absolutely no. Till all this (cross-border terrorism) doesn’t stop there should not be anything between India and Pakistan. Ultimately this is government’s call whether we play them or not. I have said this before also, no cricket match or Bollywood or any other interaction is more important than the life of Indian soldiers and Indian citizens.”
Gambhir made a passionate appeal, “Matches will keep happening, movies will be made, singers will continue to perform but nothing comes close to losing a loved one in your family.” He was drawing a red line. Sports, he insisted, can wait. Human lives cannot.
He concluded, “This is not up to me, this is for BCCI and more importantly the government to decide whether we should play them or not. Whatever decision they make, we should be absolutely fine with it and not politicise it.”

The History of India-Pakistan Cricket Relations
Up until 2007, India and Pakistan engaged in multiple bilateral series that drew massive crowds and viewership. After 2007, bilateral cricket was halted. The only games that continued were during ICC tournaments or Asia Cups, played in neutral venues due to security concerns. In recent years, the BCCI and ICC have worked out arrangements where India plays Pakistan only in neutral venues like Dubai. However, even these matches are now under scrutiny post-Pahalgam.
