Veteran India cricketer Harbhajan Singh believes mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy is a strong contender for a place in the ICC T20 World Cup spot. The global T20 meet is scheduled to take place in the UAE and Oman in October-November.
The spinner from Tamil Nadu has already impressed one and all in the first two T20Is against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Varun had opportunities to make his debut beforehand but it didn’t materialise. He was picked for the tour of Australia on the back of an outstanding IPL in the UAE but an untimely injury ruled him out.

Earlier this year, he was picked for the England series, but Varun Chakravarthy failed to clear the fitness test. Meanwhile, after an impressive debut, Harbhajan Singh has pitted Varun Chakravarthy to be in the T20 World Cup spot.
“I feel that he (Varun Chakravarthy) is T20 World Cup material because he has all types of qualities. He can take wickets, stop runs, bowl in the Powerplay, and can even bowl in the death overs. His only shortcoming is that he remains way too nervous. I spent some time with him in KKR. He himself doesn’t know what he is capable of,” Harbhajan Singh told Sports Tak.
I knew from the first meeting that Varun Chakravarthy will play for India: Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan Singh went on to add that when he saw Chakravarthy for the first time bowling to MS Dhoni, he knew that he was going to play for India one day. As per Singh, while Dhoni was hitting all the bowlers during the practice session of last year’s IPL, it was the mystery spinner who kept troubling the legendary batter.
“The first time I had seen him was during a net session with Chennai Super Kings. MS Dhoni was hitting the rest of the fast bowlers and spinners for sixes but when Chakravarthy was bowling, he had Dhoni in all sorts of trouble and dismissed him several times. And no one was able to hit him in the nets. That’s when I had predicted that this guy is going to play for India. He has a bit of nervous energy but the more he plays, the better he is going to get,” Singh added.
