IPL 2025: Urvil Patel Joins Chennai Super Kings Midway; Replacing Vansh Bedi

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed Gujarat’s wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel as a replacement for Vansh Bedi, who has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2025. Bedi suffered a ligament tear in his left ankle just before making his IPL debut against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Though he was in the playing XI, the injury forced CSK to bring in Deepak Hooda at the last moment. With Bedi’s injury ruling him out for the season, CSK acted swiftly to rope in Urvil Patel, who has been one of India’s most exciting domestic T20 performers in recent months.

Urvil Patel’s Rise in Domestic Cricket

Urvil Patel, 26, represents Gujarat in domestic cricket and rose to fame during the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He smashed a 28-ball century against Tripura, which equaled the record for the fastest T20 century by an Indian. This explosive innings highlighted his aggressive style and established him as a top emerging talent.

In that tournament, Urvil scored 315 runs in just six matches, including two centuries, with an average above 78 and a strike rate close to 230. His ability to attack from the start and his wicketkeeping skills make him a well-rounded T20 player. Despite being part of the Gujarat Titans squad in IPL 2023, he did not get an opportunity to play. Now, CSK has picked him for his base price of Rs 30 lakh, and he becomes the third player to join CSK this season as an injury replacement.

CSK’s Challenging Season and the Road Ahead

The 2025 IPL season has been tough for Chennai Super Kings. With only two wins from eleven matches, they find themselves at the bottom of the points table and out of the race for the playoffs. Injuries have added to their struggles, forcing them to bring in multiple replacements.

Before Urvil Patel, they had already added 17 year-old Ayush Mhatre as a replacement for injured captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, and later included South African player Dewald Brevis in place of pacer Gurjapneet Singh. With three matches left, CSK is expected to experiment with their bench strength. There is a high chance that Urvil Patel will finally get to make his IPL debut before the season concludes.
