The BCCI announced India squads for the T20I and ODI series to be played against Sri Lanka at home starting from 3 January 2022. Hardik Pandya has been named the captain of the T20I series while Rohit Sharma will lead the ODI squad.

India will look to start the home season on a high note winning the series against Sri Lanka at home and gaining confidence ahead of major challenges ahead.

Here we look at the major takeaways of the Indian T20I and ODI squad to face Sri Lanka

#3 Inclusion of IPL performers

The selectors gave chances to those who performed well in IPL 2022. Seniors like Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Ravichandran Ashwin Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Virat Kohli will not play any further role during shorter formats. Shreyas Iyer has been given a rest along with Rishabh Pant.

Suryakumar Yadav has been given the responsibility of vice-captain in the T20I format, while Hardik Pandya has been named vice-captain in the ODI series.

Rahul Tripathi, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Shubman Gill have been a chance in the team to showcase their talent against the Asian Champions. Shivam Mavi and Mukesh Kumar have been given their maiden Indian call-up in the shorter format.

Hardik Pandya will lead the T20I squad as it gives him the time to build on the team for the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup to be played in West Indies and USA.

#2 Shikhar Dhawan being dropped from the ODI squad

Shikhar Dhawan has been dropped from the 3 ODI match series against Sri Lanka. The stylish left-handed batter struggled off late with low scores. With the 2023 ODI World Cup, it might be the last time that we can see him in Indian colours.

Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul will make a comeback into the squad after missing the T20I series. Dhawan has been a match-winner for Team India in ICC tournaments. He along with Rohit Sharma has created major opening partnerships that helped Men in Blue win matches.

Shubman Gill would open with Rohit Sharma in the One-day international series against Sri Lanka. Dhawan is highly unlikely to make a comeback into the squad with Gill looking good in the ODI format.

#1 Ishan Kishan included in both squads

The Indian selectors dropped Rishabh Pant for the T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka due to an injury to his knee. He will be sent to NCA for strength training before the border Gavaskar series starting in Feb-March.

Ishan Kishan has been included in both squads and would be hoping to perform well. Sanju Samson would feature in the T20I squad. After a disappointing T20I World Cup 2022, the Indian selectors would be looking to give chances

Ishan Kishan became the fourth Indian to score a double century in ODIs and would hope to replicate his form during the ODI series against Lanka starting from 10th January.
