The 2019 Cricket World cup final was historic for the champions England. The hosts won their first-ever World Cup title at the mecca of cricket; Lord’s. However, former India player Gautam Gambhir believes that both England and New Zealand should have been joint winners of the mega event. The two teams played a final which is perhaps the greatest ODIs of all time.

After the scores were tied in the super over, England was crowned the champions. This resulted in heartbreak for New Zealand, as the Kane Williamson led blackcaps lost the World Cup final by the barest of margins. This decision of the ICC sparked a huge controversy as fans and media criticised the ruling. England celebrated and became champions on the other end the New Zealand side were devastated.

Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir recently on Star Sports show ‘Cricket Connected’ talked about the epic World Cup final. The Cricketer turned politician pointed out that New Zealand was extremely unlucky with the result. Gambhir said that the tag of World Cup champions should have been shared between the two finalists.

“There should have been joint World cup winners last time around. New Zealand also should have gotten the tag of World cup champions, but it was unfortunate”, Gambhir said on ‘Cricket Connected’.

New Zealand side was acknowledged by everyone with the way they conducted themselves even after the result. The captain Kane Williamson did not complain about the outcome but congratulated the new Champions England. Gambhir praised the New Zealand side for their performances in big tournaments like the World Cup. Gambhir also reckons that the Kiwis doesn’t usually get the credit that they deserve.

“If you see their overall record, they have been very consistent. For the last World Cup, and the World Cup before that, they were the runners-up and they have been extremely consistent. I think they have been very consistent in all conditions they have played. We don’t give them enough credit”, Gambhir concluded.
