Rahul Dravid, the coach of the Indian team which toured Sri Lanka for the white-ball series was seemingly disappointed after his team’s loss in the T20I series. From being level in the T20I series, the team lost two back to back games to lose the series. India were in a spot of bother in the last two games with Krunal Pandya testing COVID positive. That forced India to lose the regular players who were asked to stay in isolation after coming in close contact with Krunal.

Sanju Samson was one of the players for whom the series was a big opportunity. However, the talented batsman did not make the best use of this chance. He scored a good-looking 46 in the final ODI. However, he had a forgetful T20I series where he scored just 34 runs in the three matches. He scored 27 in the first game followed by scores of 7 and 0 in the final two games. This failure has put an end to all the hopes of him playing the T20 World Cup later this year. In short, his international career is all but over.

Meanwhile, Rahul Dravid has defended Samson saying that the wicket was difficult for the players to bat. He further said that the management has to be patient with the players.

“It was not the easiest pitch to bat on. In ODIs, he got a chance and scored 46. He was batting well in the first T20 but last couple of wickets (pitches) were challenging. I guess yeah, if you look back at the series, we will be a little disappointed. Having said that not only Sanju but a lot of young guys in this team are talented kids, and we need to patient with them.”

When asked if he was disappointed on how the Indian batsmen played the Lankan spinners, Rahul Dravid said that it was a learning curve for the young batsmen.

“I am not disappointed as they are young. They are going to learn and get better only when they are exposed to these kind of conditions and quality of bowling. Sri Lankan team’s bowling attack is an international bowling attack,” Dravid said while assessing the overall performance in the series.

All these young players will now look forward to the second half of IPL 2021 to make a case for their T20 World Cup selection.
