As per reports in IANS, Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan is likely to lead the Indian team in a limited-overs series in July. Initially, it was reported that India will play three ODIs and five T20Is. However, as per reports in ESPN Cricinfo, the tour itinerary has been rearranged and reworked. As per SLC’s proposed itinerary to the BCCI, accessed by ESPNcricinfo, the series will commence with the ODIs on July 13, 16, 19 followed by T20I series on July 22, 24, 27. Colombo’s Premadasa stadium is likely to host all the matches. 

Meanwhile, BCCI is likely to appoint Shikhar Dhawan as the skipper of the side as he the most experienced batsman in the squad in the absence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The BCCI has a large pool of talented players to choose from and it is expected to announce a T20specific side. The youngsters in the team are fresh from playing in the IPL and are in form a well.

Shikhar Dhawan To Lead India In Sri Lanka

The likes of Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Hardik Pandya all becomes available for selection after missing out on the England squad.

As per reports in Cricinfo, along with the above-mentioned players Yuzvendra Chahal, Sanju Samson, Deepak Chahar, Rahul Chahar, Jaydev Unadkat, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy and Rahul Tewatia are some of the players who might also get selected.

The 35-year-old has played 34 Test matches, 142 ODIs, and 65 T20 Internationals. Dhawan was also the leading run-getter in the IPL 2021 edition, aggregating 380 runs in eight matches at an average of 54.38 for Delhi Capitals. Importantly Dhawan was Rohit Sharma’s deputy who led India in the Nidahas Trophy that India won.

Some of the youngsters who featured in the Nidahas Trophy T20 tournament are now an integral part of the Test side that is traveling to England. Washington Sundar, Mohammed Siraj, Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, KL Rahul, and Shardul Thakur, who were part of the India T20 squad for Nidahas Trophy, are now part of the India Test side with Rohit.
