Shreyas Iyer Ruled Out Of The ODI Series Against England

Team India batsman Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the ongoing three-match One-Day International series against England. The hosts; however, lead the series 1-0 after a thumping 66-run victory at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. The 2nd and the third game is scheduled to take place on March 26 and 28 at the same venue due to coronavirus pandemic.

Iyer, who had a poor outing with the bat in the first game, suffered an injury on his shoulder while fielding at the cover. The incident took place in the 8th over of England’s run-chase. He was immediately taken for scans after he walked out of the field and as per reports in ESPNCricinfo, Shreyas Iyer has dislocated his shoulder and will miss the remaining of the 50-overs series.

“Shreyas Iyer subluxated his left shoulder in the 8th over while fielding. He has been taken for further scans and won’t take any further part in the game,” BCCI had said in their last update.

Shreyas Iyer to miss the first half of IPL 2021

Although the BCCI is yet to announce Iyer’s exit from the England series, it is likely that the injury will take several weeks to heal, putting Shreyas Iyer’s IPL 2021 participation in jeopardy. It will be a massive blow for Delhi Capitals, who depend heavily on their young captain. It is likely that Rishabh Pant, who is the vice-captain, will lead the Capitals until Iyer returns.

However, it won’t be much of a problem for Team India, who has the bench strength to replace Shreyas Iyer. Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill are waiting in wings for an opportunity to make an impact and seal their berth in the playing XI.

Meanwhile, this is the second time in six months Shreyas has injured his shoulder – the first being during the limited-overs series against Australia. He missed quite a few matches for Mumbai in the domestic circuit and played only four of eight games in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

His participation in the Royal London Cup where he turns up for Lancashire will also be of some concern. He is expected to join the squad on July 15.
