Since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the whole world is burning and is calling for an end to racism. The cricketers have also come out in the open and advocated for a discrimination-free world. In the wake of it, veteran all-rounder Darren Sammy has ignited the debate citing he and Thisara Perera were subjected to racist remarks while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.

Sammy was a part of the Sunrisers set-up in 2013 and 2014. He played a key role in the team and even led the side in a few matches. While he didn’t enjoy a great run, the former West Indies skipper has entertained the fans to the full.

Subjected to racism in India: Darren Sammy

Recently, Darren Sammy has sparked another debate on racism during his time with Sunrisers Hyderabad. He alleged that he was subject to racism as many of his teammates called him and Thisara Perera ‘kalu’. It is a Hindi word which means a black person.

“Oh so that’s what that meant when they called me and Thisara Perera Kalu in India when we played for Sunrisers. I just thought they were calling me strong black man… I’m more piss now,” he wrote in an Instagram story.

“I just learnt what that kalu meant when I played for Sunrisers in the IPL. They called me and Perera by that name. I thought it meant strong Stallion. My previous post tells me something different and I am angry,” he added.

Meanwhile, Darren Sammy has led the cricketers in the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement. He had earlier appealed to the ICC and other cricket boards to support the fight against social injustice and racism. His countrymen Chris Gayle and Andre Russell also have spoken up on the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement.
