Ajinkya Rahane led India to a commendable win in the MCG Test against Australia to bring his team back on level terms in the four-match Test series. Soon after Rahane led India to a victory talks of him being announced as full-time Test captain started making the circle in Indian media. Former Indian cricketer Deep Dasgupta has tried coming up with his opinion on the same and addressing the issue.

Talking to India Today after India’s win at MCG, Dasgupta said that though Rahane did a terrific job of leading India in a memorable Test win. However,  there is no reason why Virat Kohli has to step down as India’s Test captain. Kohli has been coping up with severe criticism after India’s loss in Adelaide and his parental leave as well.

“I am taking nothing away from him (Rahane) but it’s just one Test match. Other leaders in the team like R Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah also stepped up. Let’s hold on to our horses as Virat Kohli hasn’t done anything wrong either. It seems like people have a problem with the way he expresses himself but that’s the way he is,” Dasgupta told India Today.

Deep Dasgupta Backs Virat Kohli As Test Skipper

Deep Dasgupta further highlighted the fact that it was under Kohli that India’s won their maiden Test series on Australian soil in 2018-19 and that India topped the ICC Test rankings under his captaincy as well.

“Kohli is the same captain under whom the Indian team won in Australia back in 2018-19. India was the No. 1 Test side for a very long time under his leadership. It’s good for Indian cricket that they have so many leaders, but it’s just one good win doesn’t. Even in Adelaide, the Indian team played well and was on top of Australia except that one session where the team went through a batting debacle. In terms of batting, a captain can’t do much.

“I have seen Ajinkya leading the Mumbai side and he is a good captain who has his own style. I am just happy that India has so many leaders. Any team with more leaders is only going to benefit,” Dasgupta concluded.

This was Ajinkya Rahane‘s third win in as many Tests as captain as he maintained his 100 percent win record. Meanwhile, Cricket Australia has confirmed the Sydney Cricket Ground as the venue for the third Test. Rohit Sharma is likely to make a comeback in the game. However, a final decision on the same will be made before the Test match.
