Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer was fined ₹12 lakh by the BCCI for a slow over-rate during their IPL 2025 match against Chennai Super Kings. Although Punjab Kings secured a convincing win, Iyer faced a penalty for not ensuring his team completed their overs within the allowed time. According to IPL rules, when a team fails to maintain the required over-rate, the captain is fined.

This was the first over-rate offence of the season for PBKS under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct. As a result, Iyer received a fine of ₹12 lakh. The match also saw PBKS being forced to bring an extra fielder inside the circle before the 19th over, a rule imposed to penalize teams for slow over-rates. The official IPL release confirmed the fine, stating that the rules are strict to maintain the pace of the game.

Key Performances in the Match

While the penalty made headlines, the match itself was filled with exciting performances. Shreyas Iyer, despite the fine, led from the front with a captain’s knock of 72 runs off 41 balls, which included five fours and four sixes. His innings played a crucial role in PBKS successfully chasing down the 191-run target.

He was well supported by opener Prabhsimran Singh, who scored a quick 54 from 36 balls. Together, they laid a strong foundation that helped their team complete the chase in 19.4 overs. On the bowling front, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal stole the spotlight with a brilliant four-wicket haul, including a hat-trick. Marco Jansen also contributed with two wickets. Their combined efforts helped restrict CSK to 190 runs.

CSK’s Competitive Total and Key Contributors

Earlier in the match, Chennai Super Kings put up a strong total of 190 runs. The highlight of their innings was Sam Curran’s aggressive 88 off just 47 balls, featuring nine boundaries and four sixes. He received support from Dewald Brevis, who scored 32 runs. Despite these efforts, CSK couldn’t withstand the pressure created by Chahal’s sharp bowling.

His hat-trick turned the tide in PBKS’s favor. Although CSK posted a good score, they couldn’t defend it due to strong batting from Iyer and Prabhsimran. In the end, while PBKS celebrated the win, their captain’s slow over-rate became a minor blemish on an otherwise successful night.
