Shreyas Iyer Cleared To Return To Competitive Cricket

The right-handed batsman Shreyas Iyer dislocated his shoulder during the India-England ODI series which was played in Pune. Since then Shreyas Iyer has missed competitive cricket as he had to undergo surgery in the UK.

The captain of the Delhi Capitals was unable to compete in the marquee Indian Premier League (IPL 2021). In the absence of Iyer Delhi Capitals handed over the captaincy to wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant. Meanwhile, Iyer is now fully fit and has been cleared by National Cricket Academy (NCA) to return to competitive cricket.

“Yes, NCA has issued a fit certificate to Shreyas. He stayed in Bengaluru at the NCA for a week and his final assessment has happened few days back. Based on all medical and physical parameters, he is now ready to play matches.

“This couldn’t have happened at a better time with India’s T20 World Cup campaign in two months time,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity

The 26-year-old Iyer had done his rehab programme at the MCA ground in the BKC complex. However, according to BCCI’s protocol, Iyer has to undergo an intense fitness examination before being cleared to compete.

Shreyas Iyer getting clear is a great sign for team India heading into the T20 World Cup 2021. India’s number 4 spot still hasn’t been finalized for the World Cup. However many believe that Mumbai Indians star batsman Suryakumar Yadav has occupied that spot. Still, nothing is confirmed as of now.

Shreyas Iyer has performed consistently well for India and the selection committee can’t rule him out from the T20 World Cup team. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals would be in a dilemma as Rishabh Pant did a great job as captain for the team in the first phase of IPL 2021. Also, Shreyas Iyer led Delhi Capitals in the finals of IPL 2020.

So it will tough decision for the Delhi Capitals to name captain in the UAE leg of IPL 2021. Management would have to decide whether they want to continue with Pant or go back to Iyer. Notably, the second half of IPL 2021 is all set to begin in UAE from September 19.
