India opener Rohit Sharma answered the retirement speculation with a superb century in the ongoing ODI series decider against England at Lord’s, London, on Sunday, July 19. The veteran batter brought up his 34th ODI hundred to keep India in contention during the chase of a daunting 388-run target.

Rohit’s form had come under scrutiny after scores of 11 and 26 in the first two matches of the series. Ahead of the Lord’s encounter, reports suggested that the game could be the former India captain’s final international appearance.

The 39-year-old, however, responded in style with a composed and commanding innings. He reached his century with a slog sweep off leg-spinner Adil Rashid in the 31st over. In the process, Rohit also became the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Rohit Sharma‘s wife, Ritika Sajdeh, was in attendance at Lord’s for the match. She became emotional after his century and was seen wiping away tears in the stands. Watch the video here:

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave India a strong start in the chase, putting together a 147-run opening partnership from 146 balls. Gill was the first to depart, scoring 77 off 84 deliveries before being dismissed in the 25th over.

Rohit went on to play a brilliant innings of 138 off 110 balls. The experienced opener was at his fluent best, striking 17 fours and five sixes during his knock.

England introduced Josh Tongue into the attack in the eighth over, but Rohit Sharma took the aggressive approach from the outset. The India opener welcomed the pacer with back-to-back boundaries off the first two deliveries.

After Tongue responded with two dot balls, he dropped one short. Rohit quickly picked up the length and unleashed his trademark pull shot, sending the ball soaring for a commanding six. Watch the video here:

Rohit Sharma’s superb innings came to an end in the 39th over. He moved across the stumps to play a slog sweep off Jacob Bethell but failed to make contact, as the ball went on to crash into the stumps.
