India veteran Rohit Sharma came up with a stunning fielding effort during the series-deciding ODI against England at Lord’s, London, on Sunday, July 19. The 39-year-old earned loud applause from the crowd after pulling off a brilliant diving stop near the boundary.

The moment came on the opening delivery of the 43rd over when Joe Root drove Arshdeep Singh’s back-of-a-length delivery through the off side. The ball looked destined to reach the boundary, but Rohit sprinted across and produced a full-length dive to cut it off, saving two valuable runs for India.

England posted 387/3 in 50 overs after opting to bat first. Ben Duckett top-scored with 141 off 135 balls, while Jacob Bethell made 91 off 93. Joe Root remained unbeaten on 74 off 48, and Jos Buttler scored an unbeaten 41 off 13 balls. Prasidh Krishna took two wickets for India, while Prince Yadav claimed one.

Rohit Sharma’s Retirement Buzz Gains Attention During Series Finale At Lord’s

Rohit Sharma has faced increased scrutiny after failing to make a significant impact in the series so far. The former India captain has scored 11 and 26 in the two matches on the tour. Before the third ODI, a report by The Indian Express suggested that the Lord’s clash could potentially be his last appearance for India.

However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed the speculation, stating that the match would not mark the end of Rohit’s ODI career. Speaking to PTI, as quoted by NDTV Sports, he said:

“There are lot of speculations going on in media about Rohit Sharma’s future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday.”

“Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, Lord’s ODI won’t be his last match.”

India face a daunting challenge as they look to chase down a huge target. A successful chase would become the second-highest run chase in ODI history for the Men in Blue.
